New Car Sales March 2021

  • March 2021 saw a total figure of 100,005 new car sales for Australia as reported by VFACTS
  • Figures show new car sales increased by 22% in March 2021 versus March 2020
  • With COVID-19 cases being limited, it appears new car sales are returning to pre-COVID norms
  • NSW and QLD saw strong increases in March 2021, up 10,665 units (+14%) and 10,222 units (+22%) compared to 2020
  • Victoria is still performing weaker, up only 2,522 units (+4%) due to extended lockdowns

New Car Sales Trends

The top 5 models with the greatest increases so far in 2021 are:

  • Toyota Hilux 4X4 (+3,094 units)
  • MG ZS (+3,055 units)
  • Toyota Yaris Cross (+2,040 units)
  • Toyota Landcruiser Wagon (+1,892)
  • Isuzu Ute D-Max 4X4 (+1,800 units)

The bottom 5 models with the greatest decreases so far in 2021 are:

  • Volkswagen Golf (-3,362 units)
  • Toyota Kluger (-2,110 units)
  • Toyota Yaris (-1,335 units)
  • Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (-1,178 units)
  • Honda Civic (-1,148 units)

The top segment increases so far in 2021 compared to 2020 are:

  • SUV Light (+93%)
  • Large > $70K (+76%)
  • Vans/CC 2.5-3.5t (+75%)
  • Micro (+66%)
  • SUV Upper Large < $100K (+57%)

Conversely, some of the largest decreases are:

  • Light Buses => 20 Seats (-50%)
  • Sports > $200K (-32%)
  • Medium < $60K (-32%)
  • Large < $70K (-31%)
  • Upper Large < $100K (-27%)

Some other highlights so far:

  • Toyota continues to dominate sales increases with 3 of the top 5 increases in 2021 being Toyota models
  • Chinese brand MG is making headwinds, with its ZS and MG3 models seeing substantial increase in 2021
  • Passenger vehicles continue to see the largest declines in sales in 2021 (-9%), particularly in small (-18%) and medium (-16%) segments
  • The rental market has finally seen strong growth, up 1,506 units (+11%) compared to 2020

Sales by Import Country

  • Sales of imported vehicles from Japan continue to rebound significantly in 2021, seeing an increase of 18,466 units compared to 2020
  • Sales of imported vehicles from China continue to skyrocket in 2021 with an increase of 9,499 compared to 2020
  • Sales of imported vehicles from Germany, USA and Thailand saw the largest declines so far, with Germany down 5,673 units, USA down 3,170 and Thailand down 2,268 units. These countries have been hit by production issues due to COVID outbreaks.
