New Car Sales
- August 2026 recorded 100,939 new car sales in Australia, as reported by VFACTS.
- New car sales did not increase compared to August 2025.
- Sales remained same across most states, except NT experiencing a drop at -8% YoY and TAS growing 6% YoY.
- Electric sales saw a sharp rise by +161% YoY in August 2026.
- Petrol sales plummeted by -26% YoY, while PHEV vehicle sales surged by +125% YoY in August 2026.





New Car Sales Trends
The top 5 models with the greatest increases so far in 2026 are:
- BYD Sealion 7 (+10,681 units)
- Omoda Jaecoo J5 (+9,439 units)
- Zeekr 7X (+9,172 units)
- Geely EX5 (+8,001 units)
- BYD Atto 2 (+7,737 units)
The bottom 5 models with the greatest decreases so far in 2026 are:
- Mitsubishi ASX (-6,800 units)
- Toyota Prado (-6,296 units)
- Toyota RAV4 (-5,979 units)
- Toyota Landcruiser PU/CC (-5,098 units)
- Ford Ranger 4X4 (-4,326 units)
The top segment increases so far in 2026 compared to 2025 are:
- People Movers > $70K (+43%)
- SUV Medium > $65K (+39%)
- Medium < $60K (+32%)
- SUV Medium < $65K (+18%)
- Sports > $200K (+16%)
Conversely, some of the largest decreases are:
- Light Buses < 20 Seats (-82%)
- Light Buses => 20 Seats (-38%)
- Upper Large > $100K (-37%)
- Sports < $90K (-35%)
- MD => 8001 GVM & GCM < 39001 (-34%)




Sales by Import Country
- Sales of imported vehicles from China continue to rise with an increase of 102,997 units compared to 2025
- Sales of imported vehicles from India have made quite an impression in August 2026 with an increase of 1,042 units compared to 2025
- Sales of imported vehicles from Japan seeing the largest decrease of 50,885 units compared to 2025
- Sales of imported European vehicles continue to see declines
