New Car Sales
- January 2026 recorded 87,092 new car sales in Australia, as reported by VFACTS.
- New car sales slightly increased by +0.3% compared to January 2025.
- Sales fell across most states, with NT experiencing the largest drop at -18% YoY.
- PHEV sales skyrocketed by +170% YoY in January 2026.
- Petrol sales plummeted by -15% YoY, while electric vehicle sales surged by +124% YoY in January 2026.





New Car Sales Trends
The top 5 models with the greatest increases so far in 2026 are:
- Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+1,216 units)
- BYD Sealion 7 (+1,171 units)
- BYD Shark 6 (+1,108 units)
- GWM Cannon/Cannon Alpha 4X4 (+885 units)
- Kia K4 (+866 units)
The bottom 5 models with the greatest decreases so far in 2026 are:
- Toyota RAV4 (-3,319 units)
- Toyota Prado (-1,455 units)
- Mitsubishi ASX (-1,185 units)
- Ford Ranger 4X4 (-752 units)
- GWM Ute 4X4 (-623 units)
The top segment increases so far in 2026 compared to 2025 are:
- Sports > $200K (+167%)
- Light Buses => 20 Seats (+104%)
- People Movers < $70K (+97%)
- People Movers > $70K (+82%)
- Medium < $60K (+66%)
Conversely, some of the largest decreases are:
- Light < $30K (-100%)
- Light > $30K (-100%)
- SUV Medium < $60K (-100%)
- SUV Medium > $60K (-100%)
- Light Buses < 20 Seats (-62%)




Sales by Import Country
- Sales of imported vehicles from China continue to rose with an increase of 8,242 units compared to 2025
- Sales of imported vehicles from South Africa have made quite an impression in January 2026 with an increase of 527 units compared to 2025
- Sales of imported vehicles from Japan seeing the largest decrease of 7,500 units compared to 2025
- Sales of imported European vehicles continue to see declines
